Homemade Tub Boat
From Professr's Lair
I was tired of fishing from the dock at a local lake, and I got jealous of all the guys out there in their little boats catching everything. After some careful inspection of my bank account (or lack thereof), I decided that buying a boat was not going to happen, so the next logical step was to hack one together. I figured I would need two things - buoyancy and structure. Now, most boats use a fancy fiberglass or metal hull to displace an amount of water equal to or greater than the weight upon it. Rather than try to deal with that, I went for lots of objects, each with a known displacement and therefore floating power. The best bang for my buck was in buying an 8-pack of 55-liter plastic storage tubs from Wal-mart, which, by my calculations, would support around 800 pounds! I had some scrap wood lying around, and after buying some hardware and an afternoon's work, I had a boat. The boat - take a good hard look at it.
